With a BFA from Arizona State University and a specialization in graphic design, I started my career with the City of Los Angeles at the CRA/LA. After a few years I set up my own design firm in Orange county, which was very challenging and rewarding. I was always very happy with my choice of graphic design as a career and felt very comfortable using my artistic ability to create visual solutions for my clients' marketing and communication goals. Although I had always done a little fine art on the side, I never felt that my ideas and images were worthy enough to call myself an "artist."
Eventually, however I got very burned out on the managing and marketing of my small design firm in the very competitive field of commercial art in Southern California.
Having a complete change of heart, I moved to the island of Barbados in the West Indies, with the intention of living in a bungalow under a palm tree and just painting pictures.
Intentions well and good, I ended up forming a partnership with a neon glass blower and founding a neon plant. Running another company and doing all the signage design did not allow me much time for painting.
By the time I left Barbados two years later, the Arizona desert was calling me back and all I could think of was really painting pictures this time.
It seems my career goals have changed completely. I now specialize in very large scale chalk pastel paintings and very intricate water color work with my subject matter ranging from florals to nudes to landscapes. While I'll never regret being a graphic designer and creating art for other people, I find that all I want to do now is paint what comes from my heart and call myself an "artist."
