Michael Steele is a contemporary self-taught artist who paints
in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. At an early age he was drawing
horses from life in charcoal, his only medium at the time. Some
of these he entered in local juried exhibitions in his native home,
Grenada, West Indies, often winning prizes for the best in the show.
He later worked at various times as a sign painter, screen painter,
and architectural draftsman. In 1973, Michael migrated to Trinidad
and Tobago where he worked for 12 years in advertising as an illustrator
and Art Director. Michael still paints in various media and is also
an accomplished computer artist, producing computer generated illustrations
and designs on the island of Saint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles,
where he now resides.
Watercolors became his preferred medium following an accident in
January, 1994, in which he suffered a broken ankle. Towards the
end of that year he journeyed to Barbados and was named the official
golf course artist for the newly opened Royal Westmoreland Golf
Club - a beautiful picturesque golf course designed by Bobby Jones,
Jr. His one man exhibition held at the club was a success, culminating
in the sale of 16 watercolors produced during his four week stay.
Painting on location and in his studio, Michael's passion is to
capture not only the play of light, but also the character and "feel"
of his subject. "I try to visualize, as part of the creative
process, each brush stroke and color passage before starting to
paint," says Michael.
His paintings are in private collections throughout the Caribbean,
United States, Canada, England, and recently, in France. |
