"Rembrandt of the Black painters in Nevada"
Self-taught and nationally renowned artist Cochise Couyette helps
the community to remember their cultural heritage and the contributions
of black entertainers and sports figures. His paintings hang in
prestigious homes and in the library of the University of Nevada
in Las Vegas. A grassroots activist and champion of children, he
helped organize the Westside Cultural Corridor Coalition which will
mentor and cater to the self sufficiency of families in poverty.
The coalition is building training classes with the help of local
unions and trades to enable children to start micro-enterprises
of their own, becoming motivated and empowered to remain in school,
finish their education and give back to the community. His primary
dream is to start a small business producing a commercial line of
black greeting cards, teaching and training young painters.
