Picture of artist Harriet Mottes Mrs.Harriet Mottes has spent a lifetime painting since the age ofsix. She has worked with oils, woodcuts, silk screens, pastels,water colors and acrylics. Her attention to detail was highlypraised during her three years of art instruction at GeorgiaCollege. At the age of twenty, she experienced her firstcommercial success designing original woodcut signs in Aspen,Colorado.Having lived on Nantucket for ten years, Mrs. Mottes hasa genuine feel for the peace and tranquillity of the island andan unerring eye in capturing it's most enchanting moments. InAugust of 1998, she received the Best of Show People's ChoiceAwards at the Artists' Association of Nantucket Summer Show. Theunique beauty found in both Nantucket's architecture and foliagecan be seen faithfully represented in each piece of her work. Hercurrent work consists of meticulously articulated landscapes,rendered upon miniature shaker boxes or suitable for framing.Many may wonder how such exquisite detail is achieved. It is worksuitable only for the calmest of hands and steadiest nerves. Thepaintings, all original, are done with imported specialty-orderedsize 000 brushes cut down to one, two and three hairs each. Onewrong move may destroy hours of effort. Measurements arepainstakingly made by hand with a ruler to achieve their properperspectives. Mrs. Mottes paints four to six hours a day, oftenstarting as early as 4:00 a.m. Several serious art collectors inthis country and abroad have helped to make her artistic career asuccess
